Asia on Its Own TermsTowards New Terminology and Narratives for Research in Asian Studies

Post-Doctoral Fellowships

The program Asia on Its Own Terms Program (funded by Yad Hanadiv) of the Department of East Asian Studies at Tel Aviv University will award a post-doctoral fellowship in the field of Asian Studies.

Program Objective:

In recent years there is a growing scholarly interest in transitional processes in East and South Asian countries. Nonetheless, so far there have been relatively few attempts of an integrated and comparative study of these regions by venturing across geographical, political, and linguistic boundaries. The Asia on Its Own Terms program aims to readdress this shortcoming by facilitating interdisciplinary and cross-regional dialogues between scholars and students specializing in China, India and Japan. It is “border-crossing” both in cutting across parochial regionalism and artificial borders, and in cutting across disciplines.

Fellowships:

The one-year fellowship of up to $30,000 will be awarded for the 2015-2016 academic year. The recipient fellow will work with senior faculty members from the Department of East Asian Studies. Fellows will engage in their own research, while contributing to the department’s joint undertaking for creating a new set of scholarly tools and terminology as defined by the program.

Eligibility:

Candidates are limited to those who by October 1, 2015 are in possession of a PhD, or those who were awarded a PhD within the last five years (Tel Aviv University PhD holders are not eligible to apply). Candidates are requested to submit the following documents:

  • Proof of eligibility for a PhD degree
  • Three letters of reference
  • A Curriculum Vitae
  • A writing sample
  • A description of the work to be undertaken as fellow
  • An endorsement from the faculty member with whom they will be working.

Candidates must submit their applications by March 31, 2015 to the Academic Committee Yad Hanadiv Fund, Department of East Asian Studies, Tel Aviv University, Israel. The letters of reference should be sent directly by email to galiakal@tauex.tau.ac.il
