East Asian Languages and Civilizations Assistant Professor in East Asian Religion

The Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in East Asian religion. The search committee welcomes applications from specialists in any discipline, including (but not limited to) cultural history, gender studies, and ritual studies. The successful candidate should have training in relevant languages and be deeply engaged with primary sources. He or she will contribute to the Departments undergraduate program by offering courses in both Chinese and Japanese religion, with graduate offerings appropriate to his or her expertise. A normal teaching load is 4 courses per year on a semester system. As this new faculty position is part of a cluster hire in Asian religions, cooperation with colleagues in the Departments of Religious Studies and South Asia Studies is essential. Candidates should have a compelling and original research agenda and a wish to pursue it within the interdisciplinary framework offered by the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, the School of Arts and Sciences, and the wider University.
